Melanie Carlson fell in love with mid-century modern furniture in her early 20s. But the graphic designer and avid mid-century collector couldn't afford to fill her first home with the designer furniture she so loved.

Last year, Carlson decided to help her fellow vintage furniture enthusiasts. She launched Lushpad, where buyers and sellers of of contemporary designer furniture and modern art can meet up.

Shoppers can search by category: furniture, manufacturers, furniture designers and artists. Furniture shoppers can also place wanted listings for coveted mid-century modern pieces.

It's free to join, and free to list your furniture items, so it's cheaper than selling furniture on eBay or through a vintage consignment shop.

Furniture listings designate furniture as original, vintage or reproduction. All transactions occur between the buyer and seller, though Lushpad may assist with shipping.

Mid-century furniture for the design-savvy

Lushpad's clientele is design-savvy, like Carlson herself. Just one year old, Lushpad has more than 2,500 registered users and more than 33,000 visitors per month.

They're drawn not just by the furniture but by the fun features Carlson has added at her site. Lushpad offers original articles on a variety of furniture buying topics:

  • The best places to sell vintage and mid-century modern furniture
  • Where to sell a fine art collection
  • Spotting the difference between knock-offs and authentic contemporary designer furniture

"I wanted Lushpad to be a resource for learning more about good design and smart collecting," says Carlson.

Lushpad offers furniture give-aways and artist profiles. Its blog features information on a bevy of topics — the good karma of wicker furniture, for example. Lushpad sponsors Midmodclassics.com, a directory for design, architecture, fashion and lifestyle.

"Lushpad is part gallery, part auction house and part design magazine. It's about finding and living with beautiful — and affordable — things."Melanie Carlson, Lushpad owner

The Los Angeles-based company has been mentioned in The Georgia Straight, Montecristo magazine, Style at Home magazine, Dwell, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times.

Carlson won a place on Daily Candy's coveted "Sweetest Things of 2008" list.
