Description
The Martha's Vineyard Skating Arena was established in 1974. The first ice was put down in January of 1980 at which time the operations began as an outdoor skating facility. The land on which the arena is built was a gift from the local high school. From the beginning, the Martha's Vineyard skating arena has been a community asset serving the very people who have created it.Today, the arena is wholly owned by Martha's Vineyard Arena, Inc. (MVA Inc.) operating as a private, non-profit organization and approved by the Internal Revenue Service as a (501)(c)(3) tax exempt, charitable organization.
MVA Inc. is a self-supported and self-sufficient organization. All operating revenues are generated directly from it's operations. The arena does not receive any operating subsidies from any sources. Since commencing operations sixteen years ago, the arena has developed a consistent history of creating, providing and expanding skating programs for people of all ages, meeting the needs of the Vineyard community by providing a cost-effective and financially stable environment for community skating.
In 1992, MVA Inc. made substantial improvements to their capital assets by enclosing the ice arena and providing year round skating activities for the island's population. With the help of local businesses and a generous loan guarantee, the Arena completed a $400,000 capital improvement program. A tribute not only to the management and financial planning of the Board of Directors, but also the generous financial support of this remarkable community.
