Title
Marama Lodge, Homestay Accommodation, Lawrence, Otago
Description
The house was built during Lawrence's historic gold mining era, and is one of several around the area which may still be seen. Among these are Anthem House where John Joseph Woods composed the New Zealand National Anthem, St Patrick's Church [1892] and the Courthouse [1873]. Further afield, in Wetherstones, are the ruins of the Black Horse Brewery built in 1866.
Lawrence lies in a valley beside the Tuapeka River, is 92km and one hour drive south from Dunedin on State Highway 8, and is the ideal base to explore the Goldfields area.
Being between the coastal and the Central Otago areas means Lawrence gets the benefit of warm summer sun interspersed with coastal rain. While coastal Otago tends to have a relatively small swing in temperature from summer to winter, further inland, the cloud is less, the oceans no longer hold much sway, and the climate is more continental with hotter summer days.
