Massachusetts Turtle Rescue
Description edit
Why Massachusetts Turtle Rescue Exists
Each year thousands of turtles and tortoises are captured for the pet trade. This together with habitat destruction or fragmentation, and commercial collection of the Southeast Asian species for the Chinese live-food markets has had a devastating effect of the wild populations. For more information on the trade of the Asian species, visit the Asian Turtle Crisis site and read Box Turtle Exploitation in the Pet Trade, for an understanding of the ordeal these animals go through when taken from their natural habitats, until they reach their final destination; such as the pet store.
It is the hope of Massachusetts Turtle Rescue, Inc. through education and public awareness that one day the importation for the pet trade and the food markets will cease.
Massachusetts Turtle Rescue, Inc. was founded and is directed by Debbie Zajchowski a permitted rehabilitator and veterinarian technician from Massachusetts. This organization was established because of the great need for permanent housing for abused, unwanted, turtles or tortoises, or animals, in which their current owners cannot care for any more.
