About Us
Founded in 1980 by a woman whose daughter was killed by a repeat drunk driving offender, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, grassroots organization with more than 600 affiliates and three million members and supporters nationwide.
Mission & Goals
MADD is the nation's leader in the fight against drunk driving. Through the work of dedicated volunteers and supporters, drunk driving fatalities have declined by about 40 percent since MADD's founding. More than 2,300 anti-drunk driving laws have been passed, public awareness is rising and thousands of drunk driving victims have recieved assistance.
In 1997, MADD met a goal, three years early, to reduce the proportion of alcohol-related traffic fatalities 20 percent by the year 2000. However, the fight is not over. In 1995, MADD announced its support of a national goal to reduce the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities to no more than 11,000 by the year 2005.
