Description

The sun-drenched island of Malta lies between the North African coast and Italy and enjoys a hot climate. It has been the host to numerous cultures, such as the Phoenicians, Byzantine, Arabian and Romans to name but a few. All of these have helped to create an island with a rich history spanning 7000 years and diverse background.

Famous visitors include St Paul in AD60 and Caravaggio in the 16th Century and Napoleon Bonapart. Also known for the Knights of St John, the Island is speckled with ancient temples, fortified citadels and many churches including the worlds 4th largest unsupported dome in Mosta.

Valletta is the current capital, though in times gone by this honour was taken by the silent city of Mdina, it has a host of sights and sounds waiting to be discovered. San Anton's inland location benefits from its closeness to the Botanical Gardens established in the 17th Century by the head of the knights of St John at the time. Marsascala, on the south coast, is a sleepy quaint fishing village offering a respite from the busier areas of the island. Sliema is the islands oldest resort and has benefited from the addition of its popular seafront promenade, where in summer it is littered with cafes and ice-cream stalls. Further up the coast the newer resort of St Julian / St George's bay offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere where young and old both head for night time dining and relaxing. The resorts of Qawra offer opportunities aplenty, with those seeking a livelier atmosphere head for its neighbour Bugibba. St Pauls Bay offers tranquillity and local charm, whilst the northern town of Mellieha offers the islands longest beach and great views over the island.
