When it comes to finding places online, MapQuest.com is widely regarded as the leading Web Map Service and map publisher in the world.

First founded as Cartographic Services in 1967 in Chicago, the company was renamed MapQuest in 1999 and acquired by America Online Inc in 2000.

Upon acquiring MapQuest, AOL introduced satellite images as part of the service but soon removed them. AOL resumed using satellite images in September 2006 as part of a new Beta program.

How It Works

Using MapQuest is as easy as one-two-three. Simply enter the name of the place you want to visit in the designated field, add in any other info you and let MapQuest do the rest.

MapQuest can give you precise directions to millions of places around the world, including business offices and commercial stores, airports, landmarks, parks and more. It lists all the relevant places in the designated city and state that conform to the search parameters. If a user is uncertain about a venue's location, MapQuest also provides a list of suggestions and closest matches that may be relevant to the search.

MapQuest presents information either in the form of a map or as driving directions when one fills up the "Directions To" and "Directions From" fields.

Features

MapQuest provides detailed street information and driving directions for 18 countries, including the United States and Canada as well as Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Dominican Republic, France, Haiti, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.

In addition to the standard MapQuest features, other special services include the following:

(1)MapQuest Find Me – Armed with a GPS-enabled mobile phone, users will never get lost again. MapQuest Find Me instantly informs users of their location and provides access to maps as well as directions to nearby landmarks such as airports, restaurants, banks, hotels and ATMs. Users can also request to be advised when certain contacts in their network leave or arrive at a designated location.

(2)Build Your Route – Launched in July 2006 and currently under Beta testing, this service allows users to program their own route towards their desired destination to avoid any unwanted stops and turns along the way.

(3)MapQuest also offers Yellow Pages, a world atlas and MapQuest Mobile, which provides maps and driving directions via any Web-enabled mobile phone.

World travel and MapQuest are made for each other.
