The concept for the site was devised some years ago at a time when local information was frustratingly difficult to find online. The situation has improved somewhat in recent years, with various parties making an effort to provide regional information online, but there is still a gap. Many sites that try and promote a region are heavily focused on selling to investors whether they be tourists, or business interests.
Marlborough Online is not market driven in this manner, and is privately funded, so is not under any obligation to promote any particular image of the region. Instead, the concept behind this site is to provide an in depth look at Marlborough, going beneath the surface, and providing information that might not otherwise be published online, because no one can see any economic benefit in doing so. For those of us who live in Marlborough, it is easy to become complacent because we have library services and other material to fill us in on local information, but for people outside the district, resources are often far more limited, and the web presents the best means to access information.
The site sometimes can go for long periods without updates because of work commitments, however members of the public are welcome to submit material to help build up this resource. A key focus has been to continually improve the software that runs the site in order to be able to support a very large information resource, and do so at minimal cost. This software is available for licencing for commercial web sites, and among other things, helps pay to keep this site online.
