A Brief History of McCaughrin Maritime Marine Systems, Inc.(MMMSI)

The story of McCaughrin Maritime Marine Systems, Inc. begins in June 1996 when Mr. Brian R. McCaughrin obtained his first charter contract for a ship, but by September the company he was working with on the deal, went broke. In January 1997, he began to regroup and investigated

how cargo was being traded in the Great Lakes area. He found that large heavy cargo, which was too large to be transported by truck, was instead being transported by rail to larger ships in other areas. He recognized that this was a slow and costly process and set out to locate a vessel that could handle heavy lift cargo on ships directly from these Midwest ports and eliminate the use of the rails, thus streamlining the process, saving time and cutting costs.

McCaughrin, located a russian built vessel called a Lo/Ro Multi-Purpose, which had a ramp on its starboard stern, and heavy lift cranes on its main deck. This vessel was designed to carry heavy lift cargoes, containers, brake bulk, and rolling stock. This vessel has unique features in the fact that it had several holds that could be divided up into extra holds. However, because of its size they came upon another problem, and that was fitting it into the Seaway Lock. This among other problems once again delayed the start up date for McCaughrin. In March 1998 good news came in the form of a letter to McCaughrin received from the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority alerting him of a New Multi-Purpose ship that was due to be released, and could fit into the Seaway without excessive modifications. The company who created the ship was Wagenborg Shipping B.V. of the Netherlands and they were specifically marketing this ship in the Great Lakes area. In April 1998 a deal was struck between the two and the ship arrived in May of that year. After a full inspection McCaughrin, was so pleased that he struck another deal for 2 more vessels the following shipping season.

McCaughrin, currently charters 12 vessels for his freight operations in more than 7 continents. His company offers 11 different specialty containers which are available for multiple types of cargo.
