Description
This website runs on a Macintosh Cube connected to the Internet via SBC's Enhanced DSL service. The Cube has a 1.7Ghz G4 processor with 1.5GB of RAM, running MacOsX version 10.4.3 (Tiger) with its Apache webserver enabled. UPS systems carry the Cube and its DSL connections through short term power outages.
Cubes are wonderful little machines that are almost completely silent, as they have no fans. This particular unit has been further quieted by retrofitting it with an 160 GB Seagate drive that uses fluid bearings. At 2 AM one can occasionally hear a faint hum from the disk since the cube is sitting on a metal filing cabinet. Also, when the disk is seeking, it makes the sound of very faint rain drops hitting somewhere outside the house! The whole system is otherwise absolutely silent, which is wonderful. You normally have no idea that a running computer is in the room.
The picture on the left includes a foot-long ruler. You can gauge the size of the Cube from that. The device is approximately 7.5" (19cm) on an edge.
