Description

In March 1897, the Tomlinson lot was cleared to make room for a new courthouse. On March 5, 1897, ground was broken for the building. The first bricks were laid on March 15, 1897. The complete cost was $15,215.00, which did not include cost of the lot.

The old courthouse, located in the center of the square, was sold at public auction. Bids began at $5, until a bid of $50 was reached. Three houses were erected on Keys Ferry Street, using the old courthouse bricks.

McDonough street lamps were lit with electricity for the first time on December 3, 1913, accomplished largely by the efforts of Dr. D. J. Smith.
