Title edit
Municipal District of Opportunity No.17
Description edit
On August 1, 1995 The Municipal District of Opportunity No. 17 was incorporated from Improvement District 17 East (North). The forest and oil/gas industries have been quite prosperous throughout the years and have added to the district's growth. Aboriginal history abounds within the district; many of the names of the settlements located in the land of opportunity were created from this Aboriginal history. In 1908 Wabasca was named after the Wabasca River whose name comes from the Cree word "wapuskau" meaning "grassy narrows". Later, in 1926, Desmarais was officially named after Father Alphonse Desmarais (1850-1940), the first missionary in the community. Chipewyan Lake refers to the Chipewyan Indians who were given their name by the Cree, who noted the peculiar tunics (pointed in front and back) that were worn by them: Chipewyan (cheepo wyan) means "pointed skins". Other communities were named after their particular physical attributes, for example, Calling Lake is named after the loud noises it makes when it freezes, and Peerless Lake is named on account of its "peerless" beauty.
(Soils in Classes 1, 2, 3, & 4 are considered capable of sustained use for cultivated field crops. Class 1 being the best.)
The District includes the Hamlets of Calling Lake, Red Earth Creek, Sandy Lake, Wabasca-Desmarais, and Settlements of Chipewyan Lake, Loon Lake, Peerless Lake, and Trout Lake.
