Prior to 1918, influenza was known to affect humans, but had not been described in pigs. That year, as 40-50 million people died in the influenza pandemic, herds of swine also developed a similar respiratory illness, suggesting a causative association between the human and animal disease. The H1N1 virus is believed to be a remote descendent of the 1918 virus.
