Victorian ram sales for 2001 are up again by 10% with 13,831 rams sold to the end of December 2001, following a 22% increase in 2000, an indication of the continual genetic improvement program available from Victorian merinos. The skilful blending of the best Merino bloodlines has placed the 275 Victorian Merino stud breeders at the forefront of an industry where quality and performance are paramount. The total number of stud sheep in Victoria is 245,667. Victorian Merinos continue to impact on merino genetics throughout Victoria, interstate and internationally.
The 2002 top 30 Victorian Merino studs participate in a combination of benchmarking and marketing systems, such as the national sire evaluation trials, wether trials, show ring performance and multivendor sales and provide positive indications of Victorian Merino progress.
In 2002 at the Australian Sheep and Wool show every grand champion from all the sections (ultrafine, superfine, fine, fine/medium, medium and strong) was won by a Victorian stud against strong competition from interstate competitors. With the exception of one section, the same performance was achieved for the grand champion ewes.
