Greater Wellington Regional Council is responsible for ensuring the delivery of a safe, fair, reliable and environmentally-friendly transport system in the region at least cost to the regional ratepayer.
The Wellington Regional Land Transport Strategy (RLTS) 1999-2004 describes the land transport needs of the region and how those needs are to be met. It covers roading, public transport, freight transport, cycling and walking. The strategy is prepared by a special committee with representatives from Greater Wellington, Government, local councils and transport interest groups. The strategy covers a five-year period and is reviewed at least every two years.
The RLTS reflects Greater Wellington's Regional Policy Statement and the Government's National Land Transport Strategy. All government organisations that provide land transport services must follow the guidelines of the strategy.
