Methamphetamine Treatment Project

Description

The overall goal of the Methamphetamine Treatment Project is to support the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration/Center for Substance Abuse Treatment's (SAMHSA/CSAT) efforts to develop, implement, and evaluate the adaptation and implementation of the Matrix model in community drug treatment programs. The Matrix model is a three times per week outpatient treatment experience that combines behavioral, educational, and 12 step counseling techniques. The current study will compare treatment outcomes of the the 16-week Matrix program, and the usual treatment given at the programs. Each agency will treat approximately 150 clients, selected using inclusion/exclusion criteria, over a three-year period. Data will be collected for the following domains:

The Methamphetamine Treatment Coordinating Center oversees the activities of the seven drug treatment programs where this study is taking place. The MethCC staff organizes and manages several sets of meetings to facilitate the study, provides training, offers technical assistance, and monitors the clinical trials.

A steering committee designs the overall plan of work for the project, establishes the final study protocol and measures, monitors progress of the study, trouble shoots problems in project implementation, coordinate and approve project progress reports, and participate in final study project results. They meet twice a year.
