Description

The basic persons behind XPLORA Las Americas are Tom & Linda Gardner of Bend, Oregon. Adventure for them begins with a 45+ year friendship, a 33 year marriage, and a 30 plus year quest of seeking and understanding unusual and exotic people and places. Along with their children, Thom & Ty, they have traveled throughout the United States, Mexico, Alaska, China, Europe, Thailand and South America in search of new friends and new ideas.

Tom - Tom's family migrated to California in the mid 1800's and farmed the same family farm until 1964 in Ventura County. Tom was put to work on the farm at age 4, and always was given the opportunity by his parents to pursue his curiosities. Growing up, Tom was raised with Mexican kids and both he and Linda attended grammar school in a rural farming area which was 80% Mexican families. As a teenager he fished and explored the High Sierras, hunted on his uncle's large isolated cattle ranch (which is now the Condor Refuge), and explored the back streets and beaches of Tijuana and Ensenada, Mexico. As a college student he spent more time driving around Oregon, Washington, Idaho & Nevada exploring than he did in school, averaging 65,000 miles a year. After marrying and finishing law school, Tom tried to settle down to practicing law, but the family found themselves going to Baja every year for at least 3 weeks. With the law practice becoming too confining, Tom convinced Linda to sell everything and move to Las Vegas, where they would be closer to Tom's widowed mother, and Baja. For 10 years, the family resided in Southern Nevada and spent 2 to 3 months annually in Baja, Mexico. Most of the Baja time was spent riding off road motorcycles throughout the interior seeking isolated places where Americanos seldom go. Tom and Linda often led tours for employees and friends throughout the length of Baja. In time, Tom convinced Linda to move back to Oregon, after a brief 6 year stop in Redding, California where both boys graduated from high school. They landed in Sunriver, a resort community near Bend. Three years later, they moved to Bend, twenty four years after Tom had unsuccessfully tried to get Linda to live there.

Tom renewed his love for Baja and began to explore mainland Mexico. Today, Tom has traveled in all the Mexican states except D.F., and has averaged two to four months a year roaming around Mexico looking for new adventures. Tom and Linda have spent months in a vehicle traveling in Chiapas and the Yucatan Peninsula in search of adventure. Their flights to Tikal, Guatemala, and to the Huichol ceremonial center at San Andres Coamihata high in the Sierra Madre have possibly been two of their greatest adventures to date.
