When told in 1983 that several major music labels were organizing a festival to celebrate their power to create and market "music for millions", the independent rock band Sonic Youth instead declared their intention to continue producing "music for dozens" - they would go on making the music that they wished to make and their loyal fans wanted to hear even if it meant reaching a more limited audience.
Now, there is a way for every person to find exactly the music he or she wants to hear, and for artists to reach their own enthusiastic fans, whether there are a million or just a dozen.
