About the Ministry for the Environment
The Ministry is the Government's principal adviser on the New Zealand environment and international matters that affect the environment. We work with others in central and local government, industry and the community to achieve good environmental governance and decision-making at all levels. Sustainable development is the context for all our work.
The Ministry was established under the Environment Act (1986). We also have specific functions under the Resource Management Act (1991), Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act (1996), Ozone Layer Protection Act (1996) and Climate Change Response Act (2002).
Our departmental operating budget for the 2005/06 financial year is $58,529,000 (GST inclusive). In terms of our non-departmental activities, we also:
