Sevenoaks is a country town and is 25 miles south of Central London. There is a frequent fast main line rail service to London (London Bridge 28 minutes, Cannon Street 29 minutes and Charing Cross 33 minutes).
Sevenoaks has maintained its rural atmosphere - surrounded as it is by sheep and dairy farms, orchards, grain and hop fields and woodland. Knole, one of the country's largest privates houses is at the end of Sevenoaks High Street and a short distance away are a dozen more historic houses, castles, gardens and monuments.
Sevenoaks stands on top of a sandstone ridge which runs parallel to the North Downs. Flowing along the valley between the two runs the River Darent which then wends its way northwards to join the Thames at Dartford. The river basin was actively settled in Roman times but the earliest known records to Sevenoaks date back to Saxon times which it was called "Seouenaca" (at the seven oaks).
