For a brief period of every year the Miss Namibia pageant touches the lives of many Namibians finding its way into conversation: giving us an opportunity to reflect on how we as individuals define and behold beauty. Creating a measure of curiosity and anticipation, generating excitement about the final selections and invariably causing some good natured controversy.
And so it should be! Miss Namibia ultimately represents her country and its people, both at national and international events. Together with the honors and prizes, come the duties and responsibilities associated with her title. She is afforded a unique opportunity to make a difference: to use the goodwill of her people in promoting a deserving cause or alleviating the plight of the less-privileged: to set a positive example for the youth and to promote her country's interests. We as organizers of the pageant can only create the opportunity and assist her along the way - how she seize the occasion and what she eventually makes of it depend on her individual personality, convictions abs commitment.
Even the skeptics amongst us must concede that, although one of the smallest nations, Namibia can rightfully pride itself on the achievements of its delegates to international pageants. Whatever our diverging views may be about beauty pageants in general and the Miss Namibia pageant in particular, two basic facts cannot be gainsaid: Over the past 26 years of Miss Namibia and especially those amongst her people deserving our charity and assistance we have only benefited from the many charitable causes supported by Miss Namibia. The dedication of everyone who carried the crown has done us proud. In addition, the Miss Namibia Pageant has opened windows of personal and professional opportunities for many participants, which would otherwise have remained shut. For the winner, the title often made dreams come true but, more importantly, empowered her to reach out and touch the lives of those in need. A shinning and continuing example is the founding of the Michelle McLean Children's Trust by Michelle Mclean, Miss Namibia 1997 and Miss Universe 1992.
