Description
The Ministry of Communications has a long history dating back to 1958, when it was known as the Ministry of Communications and Works. In the 1970s it was merged with transport to become Ministry of Transport & Communications. This name was maitained for a relatively long time until 1997.
In March 1997 a new Ministry was created out of the former Ministry of Informatiom and the Communications Division of the erstwhile, Ministry of Transport and Communications. This change did not last long as it reverts to its former name of Ministry of Transport and Communications in January 2001.
The move was in response to local and global devlopments in communications especially the information technology sub-sector. It is this aspiration that informed the decision of Government to create the Ministry of Communications and Technology by H.E The President through Executive Instrument No. E.I. 18 dated 24th October, 2001 with the addition of technology portofolio from Ministry of Environment, Science & Technology. The applied technology portofolio had since been ceded to Ministry of Trade and Industry.
