I have loved thinking about travel since I was very small, spending much of my youth studying maps and collecting stamps. Three months with a Eurail pass in 1988 changed my life, and by the time I was 30, I had visited some 50 countries and nearly all the US states. However, I always thought that most of the world would be inaccessible to me until the tech boom of the 90's seemed to bring many dreams within reach.
At the turn of the Millenium, my wife Kimberly and I left San Francisco for a year of travel and living abroad. Even though we lost our fortune in the tech downturn, we enjoyed traveling together so much that we decided to continue, and this lasted until the birth of our first child, Catherine, in November 2003. By then, I had developed the goal of traveling "everywhere" in the world, and since then have tried to balance the pursuit of this goal with financial reality and family commitments. The recent birth of our second child, Charles Jr, adds another wonderful element to the equation.
The main reason I developed this site was to address a lack of standards for extreme travel. While visiting more and more of the world, I realized more and more the standards gaps which existed. And with my background in software, I thought something could be done about it.
