edit Description

Fiber optics are a technology that uses glass (or plastic) threads (fibers) to transmit data. A fiber optic cable consists of a bundle of these glass threads, each of which is capable of transmitting messages in the form of light waves.

Fiber optics have several advantages over wireless traditional metal communications lines. Fiber optic cables have a much greater bandwidth than wireless connections or metal cables, which means they can carry more data. Fiber optic cables are less susceptible to interference, and data can be transmitted digitally (the natural form for computer data) rather than analogically.

In August of 2001, USA Today Science Correspondent April Holladay wrote an article about the differences in capacity for dial-up, wireless and fiber optics cable: "Think of the speed. Suppose you were to download the entire Library of Congress onto your PC using a dial-up modem transferring data at a rate of 56 thousand bps. It would take about 82 years. A wireless connection going at 2 million bps would move the library in a little over two years. How long would a 3-trillion-bps fiber-optics connection take? 48 seconds."
