Miami University is a residential university that focuses on undergraduate courses. It is known for offering a liberal education core that complements more specialized studies. Miami University was established in 1809, named after the early inhabitants of the area –the Miami Indian Tribe. Today, the area is called the Miami Valley Region of Ohio.

Miami University has three campuses in Ohio: the main campus in Oxford, and regional campuses in Middletown and Hamilton. It also has a European Center in Luxemburg.

Facts and Figures

According to the university’s official website, the Oxford campus has 14,385 undergraduates and 1,341 graduate students; the Hamilton campus has 2,492 enrolled students; and the Middletown campus has 1,908 enrolled students. Some 8.1 percent of those enrolled are in their first year in the university, and some 7.9 percent of the undergraduate student body are multicultural students. Miami University has one of the highest retention and graduation rates in NCAA Division I schools.

Academic Programs

Miami University focuses on providing a personal approach to teaching students; this means that unlike most large institutions, professors get to know their students and provide the same attention found in smaller institutions. While teaching undergraduates is the main focus of the university, it also offers graduate programs aimed at enhancing student focus and allowing participation with faculty in important research and scholarly activities.

Miami University is also included in the list of “100 Best Values in Public Colleges” of Kiplinger’s 2007 list, ranking first in Ohio and 38th nationwide.

This state university is also described as a “rising star” in the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2007, and is praised for its "strong emphasis on liberal arts and its opportunities for research, travel abroad, and leadership." The main Oxford campus is also considered as one of the most beautiful campuses in America.

Alumni

According to its website, there are over 151,000 Miami University alumni that serve as professional and community leaders around the globe. They maintain a network (fondly called the “Miami Family”).

Facilities

Miami University has some of the best and modern educational facilities. It is currently continuing a $309 million construction activity, with a new psychology building, a new engineering building, an Ice Center, new student apartments, and a parking garage now in use. Currently under construction is a new business school facility; there are also plans for constructing a new performing arts center. The university also provides wireless internet (802.11g) in all Miami campus buildings, as well as “green spaces” in common areas.

It also has one of the best housing and dining services, and has received five awards from the National Association for College and University Food Services, which distinguished it as having one of the best food programs in the nation. A student survey also reports that 97 percent of students were satisfied with the cleanliness of campus residence halls and public spaces.

University Website

Miami University’s official website offers short and concise information regarding the university, including its history, background, academic offerings, and student life. The university website also offers online services for students, including the online course management system “Blackboard.” This system enables access to syllabi, bulletin boards, grades, chat rooms, and other course materials.

Student activities

Miami University has more than 300 student organizations that range from career-focused groups to volunteer service organizations. There are also various multicultural groups established in the university to support the interests and welfare of non-dominant cultures.

Miami University also offers a wide variety of venues and events for those seeking entertainment. It offers a Performing Arts Series, an annual lecture series that showcases world-renown artists and companies. There are also various annual festivals in Oxford and a weekly campus program, called the “AfterDark,” which provides free entertainment on Fridays. Activities include casino nights, first-run movies, and other interactive activities.
