Welcome to the Museum of Appalachia

Description

I hold the strong conviction that the true breed of diminishing mountain folk of Southern Appalachia are among the most admirable people in the world. They are kind, gentle and compassionate, yet tough and resourceful. Above all, they are interesting. I have always loved these people, even as a child. I hunted, worked and visited with the "old people" of the community, including my four grandparents who were all descendants of the pioneers who settled in Big Valley in East Tennessee in the 1700s.

My Grandfather Rice had an especial appreciation for his ancestors, and he had an interesting array of primitive items from three or four generations. When I was quite young, he stated that I "ought to start a little museum of these old-timey things some time."

So it was because of my love for these people and because of my grandfather's suggestion, that I started visiting the remote hills and isolated hollows of Southern Appalachia in search of interesting items and unusual mountain relics which told so much about these fascinating folk. What better way was there to understand their rich culture and heritage, and the culture and heritage of all America, than through the everyday articles they made, used, mended, and cherished.?
