Monteverde Institute - Home

Description

The Monteverde Institute (MVI) was founded in 1986 by Monteverde residents and visitors as a member-governed Costa Rican non-profit educational association. The MVI is distinguished from many other international study and research centers by its dedication to community participation. The Monteverde Institute is grounded in the geographical, social and cultural reality of Monteverde communities and strives to incorporate community service at all levels. Through the consistent participation of international students, faculty, researchers, artists and musicians, the MVI's programs and projects have evolved to be both locally focused and globally relevant — a unique interplay between a world community and a particular locale.

In 1993 the MVI established its core program theme; education for a sustainable future. This idea of sustainability requires that we consider environmental, social, cultural, economic, and technical factors equally; the multifaceted issues we struggle with in Monteverde communities calls for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary study and professional practice. The cornerstone of the MVI's approach is its synergism between international study, applied research, and community benefit.
