Patriotism is often portrayed in the mass media as being in favor of sending in the troops first and then dealing with the consequences. Throughout American history, however, great Americans have opposed using the military in any number of situations. Early in our history, the founders almost universally opposed the United States even having a standing army, and even debated whether to spend money on a navy to protect our shores from European attack.
