Title edit
National Association of Women Lawyers-NAWL
Description edit
The Amicus committee reviews requests for participation as amicus curiae in cases of interest to NAWL members. The Committee recommends appropriate cases to the President for the Associations approval. Recently, NAWL signed on to an amicus brief in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health. Two possible amicus briefs NAWL may sign onto relate to the holding of detainees and Guantanamo Bay without access to counsel, and a Washington state case where a trial judge in a divorce matter refused to grant the wife a portion of her husband's pension because the husband lost his job as a sheriff due to the protective order that the wife obtained against him. It is anticipated that the matter will go directly to the appellate court in Washington.
The Awards & Nominations Committee oversees the selection process for choosing NAWL award recipients and coordinates the presentation of awards. Annual NAWL awards include the Outstanding Member Award, presented on the basis of personal and professional achievement, the Service Award, presented to a member who has demonstrated strong commitment to the organization, the Toche Award, presented to the member who has recruited the most new members, the President’s Award, the Outstanding Law Student Award, the most prestigious Arabella Babb Mansfield Award, and the NAWL Lifetime of Service Award. The Committee is also responsible for bringing to attention any outside award opportunities of relevance and interest to NAWL members.
Formed in 2004, the History Committee will focus on organizing and updating the long and rich chronicle of women lawyers, through the unique resources and perspective of NAWL. No other organization of lawyers has the historical range and the national breadth of NAWL. The History Committee is working on several activities for the coming year including a possible exhibit of NAWL documents and memorabilia and a summary of its history over the past thirty years. If you have interest in history and the law, please contact NAWL or the Committee Chair to work on these exciting projects.
