The University Of Notre Dame was founded in 1842 in Notre Dame, Indiana. The university has a religious affiliation and Roman Catholic character is found throughout the university. The founders of the school include Rev. Edward Sorin who was 28 years old at that time and six Congregation of Holy Cross members. The charter for the university was granted in 1844 by the Indiana general Assembly.

The academic calendar of the university follows the semester system. The student body is large and total number of students enrolled in the university is 11,479, out of these students 8,275 are undergraduates. 780 highly qualified teachers constitute the faculty of the university. The admissions of the students are on highly selective basis. The tuition fee charged per year is as high as $31,542 whereas the living in campus housing costs $8,010 per year. University endowment is over 5 billion us dollars which places it in the 18 largest capital universities.

Ranking and Reputation

University of Notre Dame is ranked 20th amongst the universities of USA. Notre Dame is ranked 3rd in undergraduate business degree program. The school of architecture and Law stand 12th and 22nd in the national rankings. The public accounting report which is affiliated with the industry ranked Norte dame’s Accountancy program 4th in national standing. The reason for high ranking is quality of education, qualified teachers and the reputation that the institution has earned over the past century.

Colleges

The universities consist of several colleges. First Year of Studies College is where newly admitted students who have no major course are taught. The college was established in 1962. The second college is College of Arts & Letters which is the oldest and largest of all. At the time of establishment of the university it was the only college and has over 21 departments. Mendoza College of Business was established in 1921, College of Engineering was established n 1873, College of Science was established in 1865, School of Architecture was established in 1869, The Graduate School established in 1918,and the Law School was established in 1869. University also has 84 research institutes related with the degree programs offered at the university out of which Kroc Institute and Peace studies research institutes are notable.

University Governance

The university is governed by a group of 12 people out of which six must be priests and members of Congregation of Holy Cross and the rest of the six can be anybody from the public. There is also a board of trustees who are mostly people from public. 57 people constitute the board. The president however, is responsible for the university administration. The criterion for the president is to be a priest and a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross

Students

The students are classified as undergraduate, graduate, law student or graduate business student and each of these groups have their own student organization. The students take active part in athletics and the university team is known as Fighting Irish.
