The Newport Daily News is published evenings Monday through Friday and Saturday mornings except for New Year's Day, Memorial Day, The Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Circulation for weekday editions and the Saturday edition is around 14,000 and 15,000 respectively.

The Newport Daily News is the major publication of the Edward A. Sherman Publishing Company and has been locally owned and managed since it was established in 1846. It has become the most significant news medium in the area, providing information to our readers and support to our advertisers. The Daily News was named New England Newspaper of the year in 1991, 2001 and 2004 for over-all excellence and received major awards for public service in 1969 and 1994.

The company also publishes the weekly Newport Mercury, which has a claim to being the oldest newspaper in the United States. The Newport Mercury and Weekly News was started by Benjamin Franklin's nephew James Franklin in 1758 and was later published by his widow, Ann B. Franklin, who became the country's first woman editor. Except for a brief period during the Revolutionary War when the publisher buried his presses and left Newport to avoid invading British troops, The Mercury has never halted publication. Today, the Mercury is composed of reprints of local stories and photos from The Newport Daily News and is mailed all over the world to people who want to know what is happening here.
