Description

The idea of News Interceptor came to Benjamin Bérubé on November 15th, 2001. Tired of visiting the same sites to get news update every day, he thought about a software that would automatically check for news updates. At the current time, there was no software on the market that could do the job. Although the idea was good, it wasn’t before February 7th, 2002 that the first line of code was written.

On May 22th, 2002, the first beta version of NI was available (but only a few people actually saw it). On June 13th, 2002, the first public release of NI was done, with an instant success. NI was the only software that was doing all the news processing by a server, which saved bandwidth to all users. Hundreds of users were getting the software each day. The software was featured on many sites and magazines. We continued adding features and many updates have seen the day. On June 15th, 2004, the last update was version 1.13.

Although NI 1.13 was doing a good job, it was getting hard to continue to add sources to the software, since all sources were custom formats that were often broken when a site updated its look. Our users were also asking the possibility to add their own sources, which was not possible with version 1. So to provide more reliability to the news sources, we started to work on a new version that would incorporate adding RSS feeds to the software. This version would finally allow users to add their own sources of news. This new version of NI2 was first seen in beta on September 3rd, 2004.
