The News.Net directory of sites was launched in 1999 and has been progressively developed over the years under the administration of Mainstream Media EC, a company established in 1996, and incorporated in Manama, Bahrain. The ownership Mainstream Media however is Australian. The number of sites has grown to two hundred. The first site to go online was Australian News.Net, followed quickly by countries and cities, and indeed regions, in the Asia Pacific, Southeast Asia, Oceana, and Central Asia regions. Sites were established for China, Japan, North Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, Manila, Osaka, Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei, and Tokyo in the Asia Pacific region; Afghanistan, and Mongolia in Central Asia; Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney in the Oceana region, and Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangkok, Bombay, Calcutta, Brunei, Jakarta, Karachi, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, and New Delhi, in Southeast Asia. Regional sites were also developed for the Asia Pacific, Central Asia (covering Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) and Southeast Asia regions.
