Neighbourhood Watch has existed in this State since the launch of the first watch area at Flinders Park in 1985. The strength of the Watch program is in the working partnership of local residents and the local police officers. Neighbourhood Watch areas now cover most of the metropolitan area and a large proportion of country areas.
Over the 20 years of operating, the functions of Neighbourhood Watch have been "borrowed" by other areas which led to the creation of numerous other Watch areas, including School Watch, Hospital Watch and Taxi Watch.
