- Keratoconus is a perplexing, rare eye disease that affects the cornea of the eye. The cornea continually changes, becoming cone-shaped and, over time, the cone-shaped cornea distorts and decreases visual acuity. In some cases, the disease can progress rapidly. Initial treatment is currently limited to contact lens wear and then, as a last resort when contact lenses fail, corneal transplants. Depending upon the disease severity and the skill of the practitioner, contact lens fittings may take from a few weeks to a few months.
