No More Big White Trucks

This brand new (July 24, 2007) website is an attempt to raise awareness of funds that have been donated to support people who are hurting and are in need and are being used to provide luxury transportation for the NGO staff.
Excerpted from a report from a conference in Gulu, Uganda
- I have a new battle cry that developed as I was sitting at breakfast in my guest house trying to absorb the last 3 days. As I sat there I counted over 25 "Big White Trucks" - Toyota extended cab pick ups, Land Cruisers ... all with NGO logos on the side. After what I had seen in Mubende and heard here in Gulu, all I could see was the number of people who were sick and dieing that were represented by those "Big White Trucks". And then when we started talking about wants versus needs .... I think you can come up with the rest of my thoughts.
- I mentioned this around <here> today and found that hummers have now been spotted in Gulu. People, the roads here are bad BUT there is nothing here that couldn't be navigated in some more reasonable vehicle. Some one said the NGO's talk about how hot and uncomfortable it would be with out these vehicles. These vehicles that cost a fortune, are expensive to maintain in this country, are fuel hogs .... and they have them so they don't have to be hot and uncomfortable? Sorry .... when there are women who leave at sunrise WALKING and return at dinner with enough water in a can on their heads to last their families a day .... I have little sympathy for the workers here being hot.
- At closing we were asked what one thing had affected us the most today and I stood and simply said "I have come to hate WHITE TRUCKS!" The reassuring words from the other participants who were also offended by it continued through the closing remarks. Trust me, I have made a list of the names on those BIG WHITE TRUCKS and 1) I have lost respect for all of them and 2) they will none of them ever see another dollar, schilling or baht from me .. or anyone else I can convince.
- The phrase of the day is "Big White Trucks".
The President of Rwanda is my hero since he banned Big White Trucks! I want them to be a model to the rest of the world for that as well as empowering women! In fact, let's empower women to ban Big White Trucks. I am sure they could find a better use for the money .... like feeding their families, providing health care to their families or finding safe water sources .... or stopping wars.
