ABOUT AUTOMATIC SCREW MACHINES

Screw machines are automated lathes. They can mass-produce turned parts. They use cutting methods similar to a lathe but highly automated. They are typically used for high-volume, low-cost turned parts. Feed stock is a long cylindrical rod of material. The machine automatically turns/faces the part, parts it off, and advances the rod to repeat the cycle.

Automatic lathes use CNC (Computer Numerical Control) and PNC (Programmable Numerical Control) to program the lathe movements so that production can be performed automatically without operator control for each workpiece.

Blank stock is positioned in the equipment by an operator and the stock is positioned by the automatic lathe, the program is played rotating the workpiece and positioning the cutting as preprogrammed. Movements are duplicated with each piece. When the piece is completely formed, the finished piece is cut and the blank stock repositioned for the next piece.
