- The Newport Psychoanalytic Institute was established in 1983 to promote the diverse theories and techniques that have evolved from the work of Sigmund Freud. NPI is a free standing non-profit institute, committed to an integrative study of the many psychoanalytic schools of thought regarding the complexities of human experience. We are committed to an educational atmosphere that promotes curiosity, openness and critical thinking in the professional therapist's ongoing development of clinical skills. To this end, students are given the opportunity to take an active part in the creation of their learning experience, participating alongside faculty on committees and other activities related to the student's course of study. Students are typically drawn to NPI for several reasons. We offer a warm ambiance in small colloquiums of talented and creative senior and student clinicians. The open collegial environment of the Institute translates into a rich experience of personal relationships, providing added meaning to NPI's excellent analytic training experience. NPI's goal is to enable students to deepen their work with patients while further developing their psychological selves, thus becoming effective psychoanalysts.
