The Cuban Nation was first hindered by the Platt Amendment, that put a check on Cuban Sovereignty (It took 35 years to rid this amendment), then the first president Thomas Estrada Palma caused much discontent in his effort to get reelected, that let to an armed rebbelion and an intervention by the USA.
