The Oopsilon Turkey Log

Description

Oopsilon in Turkey

This is the log of Imran Nazar in Turkey. I'm going to be living and working in the city of Adana for a year, and I'll be writing and taking pictures while I'm there.

Thursday, 8th June 2006 - Tren

I've mentioned before that I often skip out to Mersin, the next major town to the west of Adana; every few weekends over the last few months, I've spent a day or two at Joe's place. The weekend just past was no different: the primary motivation was to scarper from the heat and humidity of Adana, to slightly cooler climes by the sea. The standard way to get there, for the car-less, is by train.

Trains in Türkiye are run by the state, through Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları, 'Republic of Turkey State Railways'; every train carriage has 'TCDD' plastered on the side. The trains aren't in the best of conditions, due mainly to age; the rolling stock is composed of carriages perhaps 30 years old, and a train is made by slapping three carriages together and attaching a whacking great diesel to the head. Recent development have allowed the introduction of ekspres trains, with integrated engines, but these are relatively rare on the Adana-Mersin line.
