OfficeMax is the third largest office supplies retailer founded in 1988 with its headquarters in Naperville, Illinois. The company has over 1,000 superstores in 49 states, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. The stores sell more than 10,000 branded and OfficeMax-branded products like paper, forms, organizers, pens, office furniture and a wide range of technical gadgets. In addition to this, OfficeMax also offers printing and document services through its ImPress store-within-a-store. Apart from its retail outlets, the company also markets the products to business and government customers through catalogues, telesales and field agents. History
In 1991, Kmart acquired OfficeMax in the year 1991 and merged Sports Authority, Builders Square, Office Square, and BizMart into the company. However, Kmart sold OfficeMax in 1995. Boise Cascade acquired OfficeMax in the year 2003. In 2006, the company coined a new branding for its printing and finishing service called OfficeMax ImPress Print & Document Services. FurnitureMax is a separate division of the company that markets furniture. However, only a few stores have this separate additional segment. The company established 867 retail stores in the USA and 43 joint ventures in Mexico. After the sale of its paper, building products, and timberland assets, the company renamed itself as OfficeMax. In the year 206, the company closed 110 underperforming domestic stores and opened 70 new outlets with a customer friendly and improvised ‘Advantage’ store layout. With significant moves, the average price per share of OfficeMax stock rose to $50+ in the year 2007.
