Title

Operation Skate: a Fernandina Beach community not-for-profit organization to raise support for a skateboard park.

Description

Perfected more than 30 years ago, skating is one of the most popular and physically demanding individual sports in the world. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, public ramps and skate parks were being demolished due to fear of liability.

Backyard ramps were outlawed in many places. The skaters took to the streets and soon public handrails, planters, curbs and benches began to show the signs of skateboarding wear and tear.

Because skateboarders are often too young to have a strong political voice and skateboarding, by its very nature, is an individualized sport, not organized like Little League, Pee Wee or Pop Warner youth football. Until recently, counties and cities were reluctant to accept skateboarders as athletes and provide them with a facility where they could show their skills in a positive way.
