The ADF UIX Skin project: A customizable and changeable skin
Now and then I get amazed by all the creativity that can be found on websites and applications to have them look (and feel) a certain way. Developers use any means to enforce a company's design or theme on web applications (Oracle no exception). We use CSS, HTML Tables, Frames, iFrames, JavaScript, images, and flash etc..., which none are especially easy to migrate or maintain. In order to help developers the industry has developed what is usually called HTML templates.
HTML Templates
These templates can be applied to a page (HTML or JSP) much the same way as any templates e.g. word document templates and presentation templates. The template code is added to the page, which helps the developer in the sense that he/she does not need to spend time on design, but can focus on the actual application. Some editors even store information in the page that will allow your page to be update when there are changes to the template. These changes will take effect next time you edit your page. The flip side of this technique is that it does not allow you to customize the actual component that the developer will use inside the page e.g. tables, or control what is displayed and when. All this is done by the developer at design time.
ADF UIX Skins
So, what is this?? This is the next generation "templates" for web applications. With ADF UIX you can apply a certain look or design to a component without adding code to the actual application during design-time. The new "design" will be applied when the component is used at runtime freeing the developer from even thinking about applying templates to the application. If a change is made to a particular component it will show immediately at runtime. No work for the application developer.
