Title

Otters Touch

Description

Originally founded in November 2002 by Justin Conway, the Otters quickly became one of the most well-known touch teams in Christchurch. This website proved to be a real publicity weapon, attracting over 3000 people in the first half of 2003. When Founding Father Conway fell and broke his wrist during a match, hundreds of people world-wide hit the site looking for news on his progress (and embarrassing photos of him). Currently the Otters enjoy interest from people in over half a dozen countries around the world, and the marketing team is working hard to increase the team's profile globally.

The team includes two USA touch representatives, Phil Adams and Justin Conway, who both played at the 2003 World Cup in Japan. Adams was named as one of the players of the tournament in the mixed grade. Both have represented Canterbury, Conway once and Adams for five seasons, including scoring the winning try in the 2004 Mens Open final won in a thrilling drop-off over Counties-Manukau. Other notable athletes include NPC player Brad Mooar, Canterbury hockey representative Raj Menon, and South Canterbury and Canterbury B cricket rep Struan George.

The Otters also have ambassadors in two countries outside New Zealand (this was three but Tim Elstob was sent home in disgrace):
