Title
Oxitec: developing environmentally-friendly biological insect pest control solutions
Description
Oxitec is a biotechnology company formed in August 2002 as a spin-out technology company of the University of Oxford. Oxitec is funded by Institutional investors and the University Challenge Fund.
Oxitec's core proprietary technology, known as RIDL™ is a method of biological insect control based on the research of Luke Alphey and colleagues at the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford.
century improvement to the existing biological insect control method known as Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). In the Sterile Insect Technique large numbers of males of the pest insects are bred, sterilized with radiation, and then released. The sterile males mate with the wild females, but no offspring result. This leads to a population crash and has therefore been used to combat insect pests and to control insect populations.
