Going to Nana's house always generated much excitement for my sister and me. We knew Nana's counters would be full of wonderful things to eat, the smells in her kitchen divine. My passion for cooking started there in that small, simple room. My love affair with the blending of ingredients, the tasting of sauces, experimenting with fresh herbs grew and blossomed through the years as I watched and learned from my father who was the best cook in the world. He never measured anything and wasn't ever afraid to try different things. I was transfixed as I watched him throw this and that together creating food that was not only delicious, but colorful as well. He would always say, "be mindful of your presentation, Michele."
My reputation as a cook extraordinarie became well known and gave me the confidence to start my own restaurant. Great care went into the menu, which was as diverse as it was delicious. Only the freshest of ingredients were used and everything was made from scratch. My second restaurant was a combination Italian deli and cafe. We had a pizza oven and made our dough fresh daily as well as all the sauces.
When I moved to Oregon I had the opportunity to go through the Master Gardeners program offered in our community. I now have a huge garden which my husband Richard helps me take care of. I can't stress enough how important it is to use fresh and wholesome ingredients in your cooking. The scents of basil, oregano, sage, and thyme waft through the house as I dry the herbs in my dehydrator.
