Perhaps to gain a perspective of the importance of the stars to people over thousands of years, we need to appreciate the reality of living close to the elements. Be it to navigate, to sail, to farm, to shelter, or to look to the future, the aff ect of the stars were a source of constant fascination to people because they relied upon them for the information to ensure their survival. In modem western society, we are, to a greater extent, insulated from the reality of living close to the elements.
Our immersion in an environment progressively more forced onto the planet rather than living in harmony with it, means we can become detached from the importance and sheer magnitude of nature's force. It can be hard to comprehend the importance of the planets because we are so conditioned to believe that human life and intellect on planet Earth has a divine right of superiority over all else, but astrology sees the Earth as just one of the planets in the whole universe.
An illustration of how important planetary movements have been to people over time is shown by records dating back to 1800BC which have been discovered in Mesopotamia. These show how the Babylonians predicted lunar eclipses, the rising and setting of the constellations and movements of the planets after they found that events on earth would coincide with particular planetary configurations.
