PEERS (Peers Educating And Encouraging Responsible Sexuality) // For Parents // Overview

Description

Sex is powerful. It creates lives, changes lives…and can ruin lives. The PEERS Project is a non-profit preventative health model in which high school-age mentors work with students ages 12-18 to make them aware of the power of sex, teach them that it's cool NOT to have sex, and demonstrate the wisdom of saving sex for marriage.

High school counselors and teachers recommend "role model" students known to abstain from sexual activity and drugs to train as mentors with adult coordinators. The ratio for our secular, school-based program is 12-15 peer mentors per 125 adolescents who receive the program. These teen educators present a fun, interactive, 12-part abstinence education program to sixth, seventh and eighth graders and high school students in their health, PE or home economics classes.

PEERS also has a community-based program that can be presented off campus by collaborating with youth-serving organizations. Ten to 25 teen mentors present this after-school and summer program, and are usually paid a stipend.
