Occassionally you will see (or hear) them flying through the skies while you're strolling along the beach or going about your daily errands. Eglin Air Force Base is also located in the Pensacola area.
Fort Pickens was finished being built in 1834, and saw some action in the Civil War. It is now just a very popular tourist attraction, not only for the fort tours and history, but it also has nice campgrounds and some of Pensacola's finest beaches.

That leaves the locals plenty of beach time for themselves. It must be mentioned though, that even in high season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), there is almost always plenty of beach for anyone to take a walk in private or go seashelling unnoticed.
