Reasoning
There's a couple of reasons behind my keeping this journal (you will notice I will do my best to avoid the words weblog or blog). First of all, as someone who has learned a lot from other people, whether it was face-to-face, over IRC, in Usenet groups, or simply via Google searching, I feel like I owe something to the general coder collective. By documenting things I do, there's the hope that it will also be useful for someone else (there's nothing quite like picking a mysterious constant from Apple's header file documentation, Googling for it and finding the developer.apple.com page you started with as the only result). Generally speaking, my aim is to write something that is possibly useful to others at least once a week.
Secondly, I have kept programming journals in the past, and discovered it can be a fun experience, both in terms of helping to clarify things and simply as sheer reading pleasure a few years down the road. This also explains the somewhat discontinuous timeline that is visible in the sidebar. The 1998 and 1999 entries were while I was in high school, as a workaround for the curriculum that I was in. In exchange for being to work on my own projects (though still with the eventual aim of submitting them to the IB as part of my exam), I would have to send periodic status updates to my teacher to show that I was, in fact, not slacking off. I was no Aaron Swartz, but I still go to do reasonably interesting stuff (Iconographer, an icon editor, Meshroom, a 3D modeler, and Grendel, a web-based mail client).
The early 2003 entries were from an attempt to ressurect this journal-keeping practice, but it did not last due to lack of easy maintenance (I was using an inkspotting-inspired layout that I would update by hand) and time. Finally, in the summer of 2003 I installed Movable Type, imported all of the entries and tried to make the entire process a bit smoother.
